American soccer journalist Grant Wahl dies covering World Cup in Qatar


Wahl, 48, died early Saturday morning in Qatar while covering a World Cup match between Argentina and the Netherlands, according to The Associated Press.

Wahl reportedly collapsed into his seat in the press box at Lusail Iconic Stadium during overtime, according to the AP. Paramedics were contacted and responded quickly to help. He was later reported dead.

U.S. Soccer released a statement following the news of Wahl’s death, saying the US Soccer family was “heartbroken.”

“Here in the United States, Grant’s passion for soccer and determination to raise its profile in our sporting landscape has played a major role in fostering interest in and respect for our beautiful game. Equally important, Grant’s belief in the power of play to advance human rights has been and will continue to be an inspiration to all,” said the U.S. Soccer in statement.

Wahl was covering his eighth World Cup, according to the AP.

On Monday, Wahl reportedly wrote on his website that he had visited a medical clinic in Qatar, according to the AP. He said he tested negative for COVID-19 and felt like he might have bronchitis, for which he was given antibiotics.

Wahl’s wife, Dr. Celine Gounder, said on Twitter that she was grateful for the outpouring of support following his death.

Wahl graduated from Princeton in 1996. From then until 2021, he worked for Sports Illustrated, covering football and college basketball. In addition, he also worked for Fox Sports from 2012 to 2019, according to the AP agency. He eventually launched his own website.
